The basis of the post is to make you think about what in life is significant and what does getting the new technological advancement really represent to us
Scientists functioning at the University West of England (UWE) in Bristol, United kingdom, have worked out a way to power a cell phone with Human urine.
The company have been in a position to recharge a Samsung phone by placing the fluid through a surge of microbial fuel cells. With this method, enough energy has been produced to send text messages, browse the Net and even make a brief phone call.
According to the scientists responsible, the next step is to completely power the phone with pee…I assume cleaning their hands straight afterwards.
Dr. Ioannis Ieropoulos has labored for ages with microbial energy cells; he’s considered a guru in harnessing energy from strange sources. The potential purposes of his work are very attractive from an environmental perspective.
Dr. Ieropoulos said, “We are very excited as this is a world first, no-one has harnessed power from urine to do this so it is an exciting finding. Using the final waste product as a supply of power to produce electrical energy is almost as eco as it takes.” Eco-friendly technology is, apparently, the great doctor’s main area of appeal.
The microbial cells work as the energy converter, they take the natural matter directly into electricity, via the metabolism of live microorganisms. The electricity is a by-product of a microorganism’s natural life cycle, meaning that as they ‘eat’ the urine, they create power the energy that powers the mobile. Now that’s what we call ‘pee as you go’.
Bathroom humour aside, the team have engineered a world first, as nothing as large as the mobile battery has ever been charged using this process before.
There are, at the present, no plans to promote this tech on a sizable scale, but perhaps someday we can be signing a ‘P’ mobile agreement, the trick, as they are saying, will be pissistance.
PS – I’m sorry about this one. The work and its implications are actually amazing. All credit to the UWE team. However, I continuously wanted to do one to those ‘And Finally’ type stories and now I conclusively get to. Please forgive me, one and all.
